What is Vinyl?

Vinyl is a synthetic plastic material that has the most uses compared to any other plastic in the world.
You can find this multipurpose material in a long list of products, including vehicle wraps. It's versatile nature allows for many uses. It can be firm or flexible, thick or thin and also can come in a wide variety of colors. Where did this unique product come from though?

The Invention of Vinyl Chloride

Vinyl Chloride was accidentally discovered in 1926 by the Goodrich Corporation. Take a look at this quick video on how vinyl chloride is produced:  


The invention created new products, factories, and jobs in America. As for the auto advertising industry, it created a huge opportunity for growth. 

Vinyl Vehicle Graphics

At first, only large organizations such as the U.S. Air Force could afford to use self-adhesive vinyl graphics. By the 1980's vinyl production costs and die-cutting technology had become affordable enough for small businesses. Vinyl started to take the place of paint when it came to adding letters and decals to their vehicles. By the early 1990's, colorful die-cut vinyl became the primary method of adding lettering and logos to big business vehicles. Paint remained king for car enthusiasts. In the late 1990's new technology allowed printing on vinyl with a wide format printer. However, this was also quite expensive until the 21st century.
