The Value of Vehicle Wrap Advertising

Vehicle wraps are a rapidly growing sector of the advertising industry. Why? Because of the value they offer to businesses both small and large. When you compare vehicle wrap advertising to other traditional marketing methods, you can clearly see the benefits of auto advertising. Let's take a look at that comparison, as well as how to measure vehicle wrap effectiveness.

Media Planning and Exposure

In order to understand how to measure the effectiveness of auto advertising, it's important to know how traditional advertising works. In the TV industry, the terms audience, target, reach and frequency are all used for media planning and buying:

  • The Target Audience is often defined by demographics, product usage and psychographics.
  • Reach refers to the unduplicated proportion of an audience that is exposed to a media schedule at least once during a designated time period.
  • Frequency refers to the number of times within a given period of time an audience is exposed to a media schedule.
The same aspects are important for whichever venue of advertising you're considering. However, one of the biggest mistakes businesses can make is comparing the measurement of out-of-home advertising with that of other media. While the technical definition of exposure means "open eyes or listening ears," exposure is different for each marketing medium. In concept, an outdoor exposure is an ad exposure, while a TV or print exposure may not be.

Measuring Media Costs

Advertisers use CPM (cost per thousand impressions) and CPP (cost per rating point) to compare media costs. While CPM is used for both print and electronic media, CPP is more popular for electronic media. When it comes to vehicle wrap advertising, we use CPM to show cost effectiveness. CPM is calculated by multiplying the unit cost of a media type by 1,000 and dividing the result by the audience size. the unit cost of a media type is the cost for a single ad placement in that venue.

Vehicle Wraps vs. Traditional Out-of-Home Advertising

Key media characteristics of outdoor advertising include size, location and continuing presence. One of the big advantages auto advertising has over traditional outdoor advertising is placement. Your message moves with you everywhere you go, allowing you to reach more people than a static billboard would. According to the Traffic Audit Burearu for Media Measurement, vehicle advertising can generate between 30,000 to 70,000 daily vehicular impressions. You can place your vehicle in areas that your target market can be found, and if it's not working you can easily move it to a new location or drive a new route. The possibilities are endless.

Branding Through Vehicle Wraps

A brand is a person's feeling about a product or service, or company. It's not what you say it is, but what consumers say it is. Today, buying decisions are made more on branding than they are on features, benefits and pricing. While features, benefits and price are still important to people, experiences and personal identity are even more important. Vehicle wraps are a great way to build brand awareness and keep your business top of mind. Vehicle wraps draw attention on the road. Let's take a look at some statistics showing the visual impact of auto advertising from The American Trucking Association:
  • 96%  noticed truck side ads
  • 98% said fleet graphics created a positive image for the company
  • 96% said fleet graphics had more impact than billboards
  • 75% of people developed an impression about a company and its products
  • 29% would base a buying decision on the impression
In outdoor advertising, the media is the message itself. There is no delivery device, and thus knowing what factors consumers notice and respond to is key in creating effective outdoor advertising. One of the biggest advantages to vehicle wrap advertising is the word-of-mouth effect. To maximize the effect, it's important to not only have a strategically designed ad, but that you incorporate that strategy into all your marketing. Integration of other marketing platforms can really help boost the effectiveness of your overall marketing campaign.

Protect Your Vehicle from Salt & Sand this Winter

The winter weather here in mid-Missouri can definitely take it's toll on your vehicle, and your vehicle wrap! Not only do you have to worry about the snow and ice on your car, you also have to watch out for the salt and sand that is used to help in those wintry conditions. This salt and sand could lead to rust buildup, scratches in your wrap and much more. Here are few ways to protect your vehicle and preserve the life of your Lake of the Ozarks vehicle wrap this winter:

1. Hand Wash Your Car

While you may only think about washing your car in the warm summer months, it's even more important to keep it clean during the winter. You don't want to let that salt and sand sit on your vehicle for long. To minimize the amount of damage from salt and sand, you should wash your car at least once a month, but preferably more if possible. It's also important that you wash your car by hand because: 1. The automatic car washes can use too much pressure, leading to damage of your vehicle wrap, 2. They often use re-purposed water that could have salt in it, and 3. The automatic car washes only cover the general area and may not get all the gunk off your vehicle.

2. Avoid Driving Through Large Snow Piles or Puddles

Be careful about where you drive in the winter months. Try to stay in the flat, center part of the road to keep your vehicle as clean as possible. Not only will driving through puddles make your car dirty, it can also coat your vehicle with excessive salt and sand. Puddles are like traps for the salt and sand that gets carried away as the snow melts. In addition to the puddles, try to stay away from large piles of snow. While your vehicle may be more than capable of plowing through the snow, doing so could cause snow, salt and sand to get trapped in the undercarriage of your car, causing future damage.

3. Stay Off the Roads Immediately Following Storms

Right after a big snow storm hits is when the road crews head out to start putting down salt. While you're not going to be able to completely avoid salt from getting on your vehicle, you can reduce the effect by waiting to take your car out. Avoid hitting the road immediately after a storm so that you don't drive through piles of salt and sand. By waiting a little bit, others will have cleared the way for you, allowing you to get more traction and less salt and sand on your vehicle.

If you're conscientious about your driving habits and clean your car regularly this winter, you can protect both your vehicle and your vehicle wrap from the salt and sand. The History of Auto Advertising

Today vehicle wrapping is becoming more and more popular among small business. However, when the concept first came about, the process of wrapping vehicles in vinyl wasn't very affordable. Auto advertising started way before the idea of vinyl vehicle graphics came about. Your favorite vehicle wrap shop in Missouri brings you the history of auto advertising:

Early Vehicle Branding

People have been putting their mark on their vehicles since the automobile was invented. However, it didn't start with vinyl. Early race cars added numbers and marketing to their vehicles for distinction, but the concept soon took on a business perspective. In February of 1900, Milton Hershey became the first to use auto advertising when he painted his Lancaster, PA Hershey brand on a vehicle. Originally, the only option for adding advertising to your vehicle was to paint it, and paint ruled vehicle graphics for over 50 years. By the late 1950's, a more durable, flexible option, with more design capabilities would change the world of auto advertising.

A Better Option Than Paint

This new option for vehicle graphics was vinyl chloride. You can find this multipurpose material in a long list of products because its versatile nature allows for many uses. It can be firm or flexible, thick or thin and also can come in a wide variety of colors. Where did this unique product come from though? Check out our blog titled, "The Invention of Vinyl" to find out!

The Spread of Vinyl Vehicle Graphics

In the beginning, only large clients could afford to use these vinyl vehicle graphics. However, by the 21st century, technology advancements made it possible for small businesses to take advantage of this new way of advertising. For the last decade, vinyl vehicle wraps have quickly been taking over for both die-cut lettering and custom paint jobs. The vehicle wrap industry continues to improve and ProDezigns is on top of it!
